Fostering Cultural Integration in Rapidly Expanding Tech Startups
Designed for People & Culture Partners supporting newly promoted engineering managers in tech startups scaling from 50 to 300 employees within 12 months to spark real collaboration and high-energy learning.
A 90-minute hybrid workshop held during an all-hands week, with participants both onsite and remote. Managers are overwhelmed by the pace of hiring, feeling tension between old and new team members, and wary of ‘forced fun’ culture. They need practical, not theoretical, tools to integrate cultures quickly without losing startup identity.
‘Alien Visitor’ Culture Scan
Open by inviting participants to imagine they are aliens landing at their startup for the first time today. What would seem most unusual, unspoken, or surprising about ‘how things work here’? Participants jot down their top three ‘alien observations’, then the group crowdsources these into a shared mural or virtual whiteboard, revealing both quirks and invisible rules.

Why this works
This primes curiosity and surfaces unconscious cultural habits, setting the stage for more critical thinking about culture beyond the obvious.
Culture Myth Busting Poll
Facilitator launches a rapid-fire poll: ‘True or False—At our company, you must attend every social event to get promoted; New hires shouldn’t question established processes; Our founding stories are universally known.’ Each poll item is immediately unpacked—what’s real, what’s myth?—with input from participants.

Why this works
Directly challenges hidden assumptions and normalizes discussion of ‘sacred cows’ in startup culture, reducing anxiety about fitting in.
Emoji Stories: Joining Moments
Invite everyone to select two emojis that sum up how they *felt* during their first week at the company—one positive, one challenging. Give participants a low-pressure way to share: either type their emojis in chat or hold up on paper, and (optionally) share why.

Why this works
This approach lowers the barrier for participation and helps normalize vulnerability about integration experiences.
Culture Karaoke: Rapid Ritual Remix
Break into small teams and challenge each to ‘remix’ one existing team ritual (e.g., daily standup, all-hands, demo day) to better serve new joiners AND veterans. Each team has 5 minutes and must perform a 30-second skit or jingle ‘selling’ their new ritual to the group.

Why this works
Injects playful energy, encourages creativity, and demonstrates how even core rituals can evolve to welcome all.
‘Would You Rather’ Culture Dilemmas
Present participants with provocative, real-company culture dilemmas: ‘Would you rather hire someone who’s a perfect skills fit but total culture mismatch, or someone who matches the culture but needs training?’ After voting, facilitate a discussion about the grey areas—what would they *actually* do, and why?

Why this works
Hooks the group with real-world tradeoffs and surfaces diverse perspectives on difficult, high-stakes decisions.
Personal Culture Touchstone
Guide each participant to identify a personal ‘touchstone’—a value, behavior, or moment from a previous workplace or their life that made them feel truly included. Ask them to write it down, then share in pairs how this could translate to current team rituals.

Why this works
Fosters deep reflection, personalizes the integration journey, and empowers participants to carry forward positive practices.
