Content is not practice
Information can prepare someone to act, but consuming information is not the same as performing the action. If the job requires judgment, the learning experience should include judgment.
Start with the real decision a participant must make after the session. Then work backwards to the minimum knowledge they need.
Build a practice loop
A useful practice loop is short enough to repeat and specific enough to discuss. Give people a situation, ask for a move, reveal a consequence, and create time to adjust.
- Situation: make the context believable.
- Move: ask for a visible decision or response.
- Feedback: compare choices without humiliation.
- Repeat: change one variable and try again.
Debrief the thinking
Do not only ask what happened. Ask what people noticed, what they prioritized, and what information changed their mind.
The debrief turns one practice attempt into a reusable mental model.
